From Classrooms to Country: Reflecting on 2025 Professional Development

Dec 18, 2025 · Teaching · Workplace

As the Wingaru educators wrap up the last professional development sessions for the year, we are reflecting on the incredible conversations we have had, the impact we have supported and the knowledge that we have shared - both giving and receiving knowledge, story and experience with hundreds of teachers and professionals.

Our teacher PD team have been busy this year, a heartening sign that schools are embracing cultural learning with the respect and genuine commitment it deserves. There are so many options for mob-led PD and it is great to see schools embracing these opportunities and committing to refining the way schools support Aboriginal students, working with communities and lean into Aboriginal knowledge and ways of knowing, being and doing - ways of working that support every student!

We offer two types of face-to-face PD for schools and early years educators in Sydney.

In-School Professional Development: Tailored Support for Your School

Our in-school PD sessions give us the opportunity to get a holistic view of how each school is implementing Aboriginal education, scaffolding tailored support that builds capacity within school teams to meet their Aboriginal education goals in a culturally safe way. We know that every school is unique and spending the day with a school's cohort of teachers is a great way to get a feel for the support a school needs and support teams to work together on a collective goal for Aboriginal education.

Group Professional Development Sessions: Learning and Sharing Together

We also offer PD sessions throughout the year where teachers can come along and explore Aboriginal perspectives in focused sessions. We love watching the networks that are created as teachers from various schools come together to learn and share. This year we have met so many teachers at these sessions and I think the sharing of story, exchanging of ideas and offers of support that come out of these sessions are my absolute favourite thing about teacher PD sessions. Teachers who come to these sessions are usually very committed to refining their practice and bring with them a diverse range of experience and enthusiasm. You never know quite where a session is going to end up but all of them end with energy, excitement and potential for change in schools.

Learning with Country: Getting Out of the Classroom and Onto Country

Our Learning with Country sessions are one of the most popular we run, getting teachers out of their classrooms and onto Country. Country is central to Aboriginal culture. She provides everything we need, we have a responsibility to care for her and she grounds us. Our Learning With Country sessions offer an opportunity to share this connection with teachers and encourage them to bring these connections into their classroom. The day explores local history, uses of resources on local Country, and ways of connecting to Country to support student wellbeing and behaviour management. These connections are key to supporting Aboriginal students but are relevant for all students and teachers.

Embedding Aboriginal Perspectives in Early Learning

We also offer PD for early learning educators across the Sydney area. These sessions - Embedding Aboriginal Perspectives in Early Learning and Connecting to Country in Early Years Education support educators to develop confidence and skills to ensure Aboriginal perspectives are at the centre of their practice, embedding knowledge and activities that support children to connect with culture, Country and people every day.

Professional Development Opportunities for 2026

We will be delivering these sessions again in 2026 as well as a few new sessions, so sign up to our newsletter to be the first to know when dates are available or keep an eye on the website for session announcements.

2026 PD days are filling quickly but we do still have some availability for term 2 and term 3 - reach out to Bek if you want more information about a session for your school.

Workplace Cultural Awareness Training

But professional education isn’t just for teachers. Our workplace training team have also been busy working with some incredible organisations this year. Our Cultural Awareness sessions are a safe space for people to learn truth based history and challenge some of the information they have heard in the past. They are a strong starting point for any organisation regardless of the ‘why’ that encouraged them to seek out workplace cultural education. The experience of the Aunties delivering these sessions means they are well placed to support people as they recognise the unlearning, learning and impact of truth involved in becoming culturally aware. The team also delivered focus sessions in Meaningfully Acknowledging Country; Building Strong Partnerships with Communities; Aboriginal Procurement; Weaving; and Storytelling Through Art.
